Although there are plenty of word puzzles of all sorts available on Amazon, either as books or Kindle apps, visual puzzles are fairly rare. The Grabarchuk family has assembled 102 of these puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty in a book that's not surprisingly called "102 Puzzle Quizzes," and it's a book that practically all the members of a family can enjoy, from elementary school on up. This book is the third in a series by the Grabarchuks, the first of which are entitled "100 Puzzle Quizzes" and "101 Puzzle Quizzes."For those who have the earlier games you'll find this book just about the same (with an additional puzzle or two thrown in). For those who haven't, some more explanation is in order. These 102 puzzles all involve visible objects, usually geometric shapes and patterns of various sizes. Each puzzle occupies a separate page in the book, and readers need to examine the object or objects on the page carefully and figure out the answer to a question about the objects. In some puzzles, readers are asked to identify which of three or four views of an object from different angles represents a different object from the others. In other puzzles, certain portions of an object are dark and the remainder are white and readers are asked which color represents the larger percentage of the of the object area. Still other puzzles ask readers to determine how many squares or triangles of any size are contained in a large grid.
My explanation is actually more complicated than the puzzles themselves. Readers can check out the sample on the Amazon page for "102 Puzzles" to get a better idea what some of the puzzles are like. While the puzzles themselves seem fairly straightforward, figuring out the answers can be tricky. Each puzzle has several (usually three or four) possible answers. If a reader clicks on an incorrect answer, he or she is redirected to a "frowning face" emoticon and can return to the puzzle page to try again. If a reader clicks on the correct answer, the page contains an explanation (albeit a fairly brief one) of why that answer was correct. The book's linking structure makes it virtually impossible for readers to inadvertently spoil a puzzle they haven't tried yet by revealing the correct answer.
All of the puzzles contained in "102 Puzzles" can be solved by some combination of careful observation and spatial recognition, logic, and mathematics. The authors rate each puzzle from one to five stars in order of difficulty, but most of the puzzles are two- or three-star puzzles. Good high school students should be able to solve the three-star puzzles, while some of the tougher puzzles can be quite challenging for many adults. As a result, this is an excellent book for the entire family, one that is both educational and entertaining.
I received this book for free as a promotion, but the authors normally sell it for 99 cents. At that price, I think it's a bargain. Most people will probably want to take their time working on the puzzles, especially if they find the puzzles particularly challenging. Trying to go through the book too quickly will likely lead to resorting to guesswork in frustration rather than trying to carefully work out a puzzle. Most readers, though, will take their time and have a well earned feeling of accomplishment for figuring out some of the trickier puzzles.
Although, admittedly, there aren't many books of this nature available on Amazon, the Grabarchuks' series, of which "102 Puzzles" is one book, are among of the best, and most challenging, puzzle books that I've encountered. "102 Puzzles" is one of those rare game books that truly is "fun for the whole family."

The Grabarchuk Family continues to (somehow) create fresh new puzzles that are meant to not only entertain and pass the hours of solitude but that are becoming near video games in style of presentation. This newest edition - 102 PUZZLE QUIZZES - seems the most fair of all. Each puzzle in this collection of mind twisters is colorful and interactive and most important, each is designated with stars at the top that indicated the degree of difficulty. Most of the few star pieces are solvable with a bit of concentration and patience. They are dealing with spatial relations and training the eye to look beyond the obvious and find the subtle answer. Once the selection of answer is made form the bottom of that page, clicking on the answer immediately tells you 'right or wrong' and the player who receives a 'wrong' doesn't get to see the correct solution without returning to the puzzle at hand.
As the puzzles advance in complexity they become more fascinating and challenging. Yes, every one of them has a solution, but there are tricks that deflect the eye coordination at first and make the puzzler pause and really thinking all manifestations of their choice of answer before checking with the right/wrong section. In addition to providing a terrific gaming experience to while away the hours in an airport or waiting in an outer office for an appointment, take along the , dial up these puzzles, and it is time well spent instead of wasted. People are always looking for that mind teaser that they can play and enjoy to kill some time with. How about playing 102 mind teasers that will force you to think out of the box and have fun at the same time? What is so nice about this puzzle book is that there are multiple types of puzzles that test your mental capabilities and perception. They range from making logical decisions, to geometry, spatial interpretation and many more concepts. The puzzles start off easy and progressively get harder as the book goes on.
Every one of these creations is an original concept from the Grabarchuk Family and they are presented in this book in the format that is good to play on a device that has an e-reader screen. The images are black and white and especially optimized for an e-ink screen. They are great to play on your different versions of your , Fire, iPad, iPhone, Android, PC, MAC or other devices. This book is designed to be used in any e-reader or app. I truly enjoy playing these puzzles and they are hard to stop playing once you start. I like to set down with a pencil and paper to tinker on solving the harder ones. I played this puzzle book on my Fire and also on an iPad 3.
These are great to play while traveling in the car or waiting at the airport for your next flight. I even like playing them in the evening for just a quiet and mind numbing workout. This is a good book and I recommend it to you. I rate it 5 stars.
